SUMMARY:DISplace
DESCRIPTION:June 13\, 2025 to January 4\, 2027. \nCo-curated by Native Hawaiian artist and kapa-maker\, Lehuauakea\, and artist and educator\, Kanani Miyamoto\, this exhibition sheds light on the often-overlooked histories and movement of people who connect Hawaiʻi and the Pacific Northwest since the arrival of the first documented Native Hawaiians to the West Coast in 1787. \nDISplace features visual art by regional Native Hawaiian creatives\, family stories and ephemera\, historic photographs\, and archival objects to honor these histories and reclaim the narrative through the voices of families and individual descendants today. \nThe co-curators\, both members of the mixed-Native Hawaiian diaspora\, draw parallels between their lived experiences and those of others who have relocated or have ties to the Pacific Northwest\, contextualized by a larger timeline of significant historical events. \n‘Dis place’ — this place — is a nod to the pride and resilience of these communities in the face of displacement from their original homelands. DISplace is a crucial step in recovering and celebrating these important AAPI (Asian American/Pacific Islander) histories while building an ongoing narrative of collective resilience and growing legacy no matter where we call home.

SUMMARY:Bunka No Hi
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 1\, 2026. Come to Bunka no Hi (Culture Day) at the JCCCW! \nThis year’s event will feature the life and work of Sam Goto (1933-2017)\, a local Japanese American cartoonist. Come see the Seattle Samurai exhibition\, a compilation of his work\, based on the award-winning book of the same name by his daughter\, Kelly Goto. The exhibit will contain comics with both English and Japanese text\, and Kelly’s presentation will also contain bilingual text. \nAlong with the experiences and history of Japanese Americans that provided the background for Sam’s comics\, he was also heavily influenced by Bushido (the samurai code of conduct) and Japanese cultural values. To introduce samurai culture\, there will be an Iaido sword demonstration\, a samurai armor display\, and more. \nBesides these samurai-themed activities\, learn about the Game of Go\, see a tea ceremony demonstration\, enjoy fun crafts\, and authentic Japanese foods. Don’t miss out! \nAll ages are welcome. This event is free and open to the public\, with free access provided by 4Culture. Food and drinks will be available for purchase during the event.
