This exhibit elaborates on who an Elder can be and what a society that values and supports an Elder might look like. \nIn this exhibit\, we celebrate the caregivers and community organizations that are making that world possible with first-hand community stories about living through many ages of time.

SUMMARY:Side by Side: Nihonmachi Scenes
DESCRIPTION:August 16\, 2024 through May 11\, 2025. \nSeattle’s pre-WWII nihonmachi\, or Japantown\, looked very different than it does today. \nIn the decade before the war\, three Issei artists flourished in the thriving Japanese community before the mass incarceration changed the face of the neighborhood forever. Kamekichi Tokita (1897-1948)\, Kenjiro Nomura (1896-1956)\, and Takuichi Fujii (1891-1964) received widespread recognition and praise for their paintings\, which provide an intimate view of what nihonmachi’s familiar streets\, alleys\, storefronts\, and houses looked like before the war. \nIn the American post-war years\, the three artists fell into obscurity as the Japanese community struggled to rebuild their lives\, but recently their life stories and artistic achievements have gradually been brought back to light. Side By Side features their work from the 1930s during the height of their artistic recognition and is the largest exhibition featuring the three artists’ work.

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 1\, 2024 – Thursday\, October 31\, 2024. Discover the gardens this fall during our annual Squash Hunt. Explore the grounds with your map in search of these home-grown\, decorative delicacies! Children can get a sticky tape bracelet from the volunteer greeter or Guest Services staff and set off on a fall gathering adventure through the gardens. Stop at multiple squash displays\, discover a treat from nature\, and use it to decorate your bracelet. \nPause at the Residence to snap a photo of yourselves with our largest pumpkin and guess its weight to be entered in a drawing for a choice between six gift admission passes or a complimentary Friends/Family Membership to Bloedel Reserve. \nDress up for Halloween on October 26 and trick-or-treat yourself to a hot cup of cider before you set off on your adventure through the gardens! \nTimed tickets are required and the event is included with cost of admission to the Reserve.
