DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 3\, 2026.  There will be a free community screening of Our Mr. Matsura\, a documentary created by independent filmmaker Beth Harrington held at the Nippon Kan Theatre on Saturday\, October 3rd. \nSettling in rural Okanogan County\, WA in the early 1900s after immigrating from Japan\, Frank Matsura became the region’s leading photographer. Well-known for his charming and playful photographs of the diverse peoples living in the area along with unconventional self-portraits\, Matsura was a beloved member of the community who built bridges across cultures and left a lasting legacy that is still remembered within the region today. \nDoors open at 1 PM. Opening remarks and the film will begin at 1:30 PM. A Q & A session and reception with light refreshments will follow the screening. Come to Bunka no Hi (Culture Day) at the JCCCW! \nThis year’s event will feature the life and work of Sam Goto (1933-2017)\, a local Japanese American cartoonist. Come see the Seattle Samurai exhibition\, a compilation of his work\, based on the award-winning book of the same name by his daughter\, Kelly Goto. The exhibit will contain comics with both English and Japanese text\, and Kelly’s presentation will also contain bilingual text. \nAlong with the experiences and history of Japanese Americans that provided the background for Sam’s comics\, he was also heavily influenced by Bushido (the samurai code of conduct) and Japanese cultural values. To introduce samurai culture\, there will be an Iaido sword demonstration\, a samurai armor display\, and more. \nBesides these samurai-themed activities\, learn about the Game of Go\, see a tea ceremony demonstration\, enjoy fun crafts\, and authentic Japanese foods. Don’t miss out! \nAll ages are welcome. This event is free and open to the public\, with free access provided by 4Culture. Food and drinks will be available for purchase during the event.
