SUMMARY:Kodo One Earth Tour 2025: Warabe
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 31 and Saturday\, February 1\, 2025. Let your soul dance to the rhythm of life! Celebrating more than 40 years\, Kodō returns to North America with One Earth Tour 2025: Warabe\, a thrilling performance that revisits the ensemble’s early repertoire — lending simple forms of taiko expression that highlight its unique sound\, resonance and physicality. With Warabe\, Kodō explores the desire to play the drums with the simple heart of a child. These highly athletic drummers\, bearers of a centuries-old Japanese tradition\, create a universe of sound and emotion through thunderous percussion and polished theatricality. Capturing the essence of Kodō’s early days\, this family-friendly performance celebrates the ensemble’s enduring spirit as children of the drum. Come and experience the soul-stirring rhythm of life firsthand.

SUMMARY:Tsunami: Our Shock\, Pain and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 14\, 2024. Amya (“A-mi-ya”) Miller is a bilingual and bicultural American who was born and raised in Japan. When the March 11\, 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster struck northeast Honshu\, she flew from Boston\, where she lived with her husband\, to the disaster region. Following her conscience\, she first visited the Tohoku region as a volunteer interpreter for an American disaster clean-up nonprofit. She spent the next ten years using her skills to help a young new mayor\, Futoshi Toba\, rebuild Rikuzentakata\, a city of 23\,000 in 2010 that ranks among the hardest-hit tsunami-affected Japanese communities.  \nSignificantly\, Miller returned to the US to write a book about her experience. Northwest Americans need to hear her story\, as in her words\, “we’re just not ready” to face the similar natural disaster that science says is destined to recur on our Pacific shores.  \nMiller opens her North American book tour with a talk sponsored by the Japan-America Society of the State of Washington (7-8 PM). It will be followed by book signing and a social (until 9 PM). \nFree and open to the public (donations appreciated). \nReservations needed (for planning purposes).

SUMMARY:The Tengu Club Documentary
DESCRIPTION:Fishing is Hilary Hutcheson’s life\, and before she knew it\, her career. But\, by her own admission\, she overlooked opportunities to learn about her heritage as a Japanese American to focus on being on the water. So when motherhood sparked a curiosity to learn more about herself and her family\, she sought out a distant relative in Seattle with a shared love of fishing. \nAs she peels back the layers of her own identity\, she learns about Seattle Tengu Club\, the oldest salmon fishing club in the United States. By exploring the club’s creation and its enduring legacy\, Hilary confronts pieces of unexposed history\, revealing the aftermath of WWII and the internment camps for thousands of Japanese American families. \nFilm is approximately 30 minutes. \nYETI Presents | The Tengu Club – YouTube

DESCRIPTION:Barbara Yoshida Berthiaume has been educating communities in the US and in Europe about the incarceration of Japanese-Americans during WWII for decades. This documentary explores how the discovery of her family’s incarceration and military service in the 442nd combat regiment sparked her lifelong research and draws parallels to the ongoing stigmatization of immigrants in today’s America. \nEchoes of 1942: Can it Happen Again? – YouTube

SUMMARY:Unearthing History: Planting the Seeds for Densho’s Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 10\, 2024. Virtual event. In their anthology\, The Literature of Japanese American Incarceration\, co-editors Frank Abe and Floyd Cheung\, along with translator Andrew Way Leong\, recover and reframe the writings of people targeted by exclusion and forced removal during WWII. \n“Our volume recovers pieces that have been long overlooked on the shelf\, buried in the archives\, or languished unread in the Japanese language… We never knew of these writings because we couldn’t read them. With our anthology we have scratched the surface of writing from the camps that is still out there waiting to be read\,” shares Frank Abe. \nIncluded in this landmark anthology are eighteen new translations of pieces originally written in Japanese. In the short story “They Took My Father Too\,” Kibei Nisei writer Fujiwo Tanisaki creates the character of a Nisei son who returns home to learn the FBI has arrested his father and taken him to a prison camp near Los Angeles\, likely the Tuna Canyon Detention Station. Read “They Took My Father Too” at the Densho Catalyst.
