SUMMARY:Post War WWII Life in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 13\, 2025. Curtis Wong asked his father a simple question: “What did you do in the War?” His father Wayne pointed to a dark green wooden footlocker under the house which was covered in 50+ years of dust. \nThat was the beginning of the discovery. Once opened\, Curtis found cameras\, unexposed 35mm film and dozens of images of Japanese people and American soldiers. There were also photos of the remains of the World War II firebombing outside of Tokyo. As a Chinese American soldier in the Signal Corps during the Occupation\, Wong masterfully captured ordinary postwar life. \nJoin Curtis Wong (MOHAI Board Member)\, Devorah Romanek (MOHAI Chief of Exhibits and Interpretive Services)\, and Leonard Garfield (MOHAI Executive Director) for a discussion of Wayne Wong’s collection and the lessons we can learn from it today. \nFollowing the presentation\, Team Obscura (Asa Symons\, Caiya Wiltshire\, Hridae Walia\, and Nick Hallin) will immerse audience members in the photographic perspective of Wayne Wong\, presenting a personalized\, evolving documentary experience. The “Portola Obscura”\, a retrofitted VR headset\, tracks an individual user’s gaze\, using positional metadata to chart a narrative trajectory through Wayne’s images. The resulting documentary is then overlaid with the user’s gaze and projected to a wider audience\, offering insight into how others perceive and interpret images. \nTickets for this program are free\, but do not include access to MOHAI’s exhibitions. You can RSVP here. \nOur event will place special emphasis on the five designated park sites where Japanese Americans were incarcerated: Manzanar\, Minidoka\, Tule Lake\, Amache and Honouliuli National Historic Site. Just across the water\, Bainbridge Island was the first place Japanese Americans were forcibly removed from their homes and sent to confinement sites that are now at risk of erasure. America must not risk repeating its mistakes by censoring the lessons these sites teach. \nCome listen to speakers\, wave signs and demonstrate solidarity with our national parks and cultural sites protected within the National Park System. Together we’ll tell members of Congress to protect every park – big and small. \nAfter the event\, the Wing Luke Museum will lead a walk down the Japanese American Remembrance Trail. Please RSVP to reserve your spot on the tour! \nOur national parks represent a promise to preserve nature and history there for generations to come. That promise is being broken with dramatic funding cuts\, staff reductions and attempts to dramatically alter the historical narratives at our parks. A “Kizoku Ishiki Obon” celebration will be hosted at the Vashon Cemetery Saturday\, August 9th\, noon to 5 p.m. Kizoku Ishiki means a deep sense of belonging and Obon is the annual festival to appreciate our ancestors\, our indebtedness to others and joyfully dance. Kizoku Ishiki Obon will honor and learn about our Asian immigrant ancestors and recognize our Black\, Indigenous\, and immigrant ancestors buried at the Vashon Cemetery. In many cultural traditions\, ancestral veneration remains deeply ingrained in daily life. These communal celebrations maintain a connection to the past and seek guidance from ancestors concerning health\, agriculture and community. Fresh food\, family activities and community connection are integral to Obon celebrations. \nA Bon Odori Buddhist folk dance is often performed during these festivals. It provides an opportunity to celebrate and honor an ancestor’s life with “okagesama de” – a Japanese saying meaning I am because of you. It is an expression of gratitude for those that have gone before us. Festival attendees will be invited to join these simple communal Bon Odori line dances. \nThe Vashon celebration will include special performances\, including traditional Japanese music by Minyo members and Koto no Wa; poetry by author\, lawyer and activist Troy Osaki\, classical harp by Vanessa Stovall and dani tirrells’ Congregation\, with dance excerpts from Elysium (afterlife). \nMembers from The Vashon Heritage Museum and Mukai Farm and Garden will be located throughout the grounds to share information about families buried at the cemetery. There will be guided walking tours highlighting the cemetery trees\, including the recently planted cherry tree from the Vashon Island Fruit Club’s “100 Cherry Trees Project”. On display will be cultural crafts and a Friendship Bench with the Aunties. \nAugust 9th is the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. The Vashon Obon will commemorate this terrible event by offering a special peace procession of costumed dancers in a siege of herons during the Obon celebration. Local artist\, Chantal Uto designed the heron costumes which were commissioned by the Wild Wood Foundation. \nEstablished in 1977\, the King County Cemetery District #1 is a public owned cemetery district located on Vashon Island. Part of their mission includes ensuring that the cemetery grounds reflect the character and traditions of Vashon-Maury Island\, both historic and present. \nKintsugi Somatic Art\, event organizer\, is founded and directed by multi-disciplinary artist and social justice activist\, Leah Okamoto Mann. “Kintsugi” is a Japanese concept which means mend with gold. It is the art of repairing broken things\, traditionally pottery or glass. Remembrance and Lanterns Shine Hope on Green Lake. \nWith music\, poetry\, and a lantern floating ceremony\, From Hiroshima to Hope will shine hope and light on Green Lake on Wednesday evening\, August 6\, the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima on August 6 and Nagasaki on August 9. The annual remembrance event honors the victims of the atomic bombings\, and all victims of violence. With 1\,000 candle-lit lanterns floating on Green Lake\, From Hiroshima to Hope is one of the largest commemorations of the atomic bombings held outside of Japan. \nFrom Hiroshima to Hope begins at 6:00 PM with lantern preparation\, followed at 6:30 PM with performances by Koto no WA and Heron Dancers. The family program gets underway at 7:00 PM and features the popular Japanese American drumming group\, Seattle Kokon Taiko. Sharon Maeda\, noted Seattle social justice activist and journalist\, will emcee the program. Performers include keynote speaker Stan Shikuma\, activist with Tsuru for Solidarity; Seattle Youth Poet Laureate Janae Lu\, The Rhapsody Songsters\, Cello performance by Seattle-Japan Suzuki Institute\, and Patrick Johnson on shakuhachi. The candle-lit lantern ceremony begins at 8:00 PM\, with lanterns floating on the lake at dusk. This year also marks the 83rd anniversary of Executive Order 9066\, which led to the incarceration of Japanese Americans on the U.S. West Coast. \nThe event is created annually by the non-profit organization\, From Hiroshima to Hope\, and is sponsored by local community organizations\, with grant support from The Abe Keller Peace Education Fund. For over 30 years\, Walk for Rice has brought people together to raise funds for the ACRS Food Bank and nutrition programs while raising awareness about food insecurity in Asian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander communities. The campaign kicks off in the spring and concludes with a multicultural community celebration and three-mile walk at Seward Park in June. \nAsian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander communities are diverse and growing\, yet many face barriers to securing food\, emergency meals\, and other basic necessities. The ACRS Food Bank ensures those experiencing food insecurity can receive culturally familiar items like rice\, tofu\, dry noodles\, and fresh produce such as bok choy. Each year\, the Food Bank distributes around one million pounds of food to around 5\,000 people\, the majority seniors and children. \nSince the first walk in 1990 by co-founders Sam Mitsui and Herb and Bertha Tsuchiya\, Walk for Rice has grown from 45 walkers to hundreds of participants each year\, raising more than $4 million to fight hunger in our region. DESCRIPTION:June 24 to July 29\, 2025. \nThe Mukai Studio Ghibli Fest kicks off on Tuesday\, June 24 at 7:00 PM with a showing of Porco Rosso the 1992 film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki\, about a WWI former ace fighter\, who has been transformed by a curse to have the head of pig.   This new English dub features the voices of Michael Keaton\, Cary Elwes\, Susan Egan\, and Kimberly Williams-Paisley\, \nAnd karaoke at Ghibli Fest will be back\, by popular demand\, so you can sing your heart out. \nUnfortunately\, in order to secure licensing from Ghibli Studios\, we had to agree to minimum admission charge of $6. This differs from our original “donation only” policy\, but we guarantee that no one will be denied admission if they do not have $6. We will cover it another way. Of course\, donations on top of the admission fee are warmly accepted.

An event that celebrates pop culture\, movies\, television\, comic books\, anime\, collectibles\, gaming\, and music to create fan experiences and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities each Summer. Meet Brian Tochi and many others at Summer Con. \n\nBrian Tochi is an actor and voice artist with a prolific career spanning over five decades. Tochi debuted in 1968 on the sitcom He & She. He gained early recognition as Ray Tsing Tao in Star Trek: The Original Series and later appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation. His guest roles included The Brady Bunch\, Kung Fu\, and Hawaii Five-O.\n\n\nIn the 1980s\, Tochi became widely known for playing Toshiro Takashi in the Revenge of the Nerds franchise and Cadet Tomoko Nogata in Police Academy 3: Back in Training and Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol. Tochi voiced Leonardo in the first three live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films (1990-1993).\n\n\n\nHis television work includes recurring roles in St. Elsewhere as Dr. Alan Poe and Santa Barbara\, plus a lead in Space Academy as Tee Gar Soom. Tochi also starred alongside Patrick Swayze in The Renegades.\n\n\n\nAs a voice actor\, he lent his talents to animated series like Avatar: The Last Airbender (Than\, Ham Ghao)\, Dexter’s Laboratory\, Johnny Bravo\, and Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm (Liu Kang)\, as well as films like The Iron Giant and Mulan II.\n\n\n\nMeet Brian Tochi all weekend at the Washington State Summer Con.
