SUMMARY:Walk for Rice
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 28\, 2025. For over 30 years\, Walk for Rice has brought people together to raise funds for the ACRS Food Bank and nutrition programs while raising awareness about food insecurity in Asian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander communities. The campaign kicks off in the spring and concludes with a multicultural community celebration and three-mile walk at Seward Park in June. \nAsian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander communities are diverse and growing\, yet many face barriers to securing food\, emergency meals\, and other basic necessities. The ACRS Food Bank ensures those experiencing food insecurity can receive culturally familiar items like rice\, tofu\, dry noodles\, and fresh produce such as bok choy. Each year\, the Food Bank distributes around one million pounds of food to around 5\,000 people\, the majority seniors and children. \nSince the first walk in 1990 by co-founders Sam Mitsui and Herb and Bertha Tsuchiya\, Walk for Rice has grown from 45 walkers to hundreds of participants each year\, raising more than $4 million to fight hunger in our region. Join the community and Walk for Rice!

SUMMARY:Looking Back Looking Forward
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 24\, 2025. The Wing Luke Museum invites the community to “Looking Forward\, Looking Back”. Together\, we’ll honor the past\, engage with the present\, and shape the future of the Eng Family homestead parking lot. \nIn 2023\, the Museum acquired the site from the Eng family to steward the homestead as part of its immersive educational programming and extend its exhibits into the community. The homestead was one of the last remaining intact single-family homes in the C-ID and an inspiring symbol of resilience\, resourcefulness\, and quiet resistance in the face of redlining laws prevalent at the time. The original home is being preserved\, however\, the parking lot is currently being assessed for alternative\, creative uses. \n\n\n\nJoin us in Canton Alley\, from King Street to 611 8th Ave. South\, for interactive activities\, art making\, refreshments\, and more—including discussions with urban planners and an opportunity to share your vision through a community survey. \nFollow the Museum’s social media for updates\, and learn more about the Eng family homestead here.

SUMMARY:KINTSUKUROI Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, March 28 and Saturday\, March 29\, 2025. The JCCCW has partnered with Ikeibi Films to bring the film Kintsukuroi to Seattle! This emotional film shares the injustices and hardships experienced by Japanese American families as their lives were forever changed by the signing of Executive Order 9066 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Join two families from California on their journeys as they are forced to leave their homes and taken to the concentration camps. Some of the families’ members eventually find themselves on the European battlefront to join the war effort as part of the now legendary 442nd Regimental Combat Team\, composed almost entirely of Nisei and the most decorated unit in U.S. military history. \nThe film will be screened twice in the last week of March. Each screening will be followed by a Q & A session with members of the cast and crew\, such as producers Kerwin Berk and Samantha Takizawa\, along with David Kiyoshi Tom – the actor for Mr. Ibata and a UW alumni! \nThe first screening will be held at the University of Washington Architecture Hall\, Room ARC 147 on Friday\, March 28th. Doors open at 6 PM and the film will start at 7 PM. The second will be held at the historic Nippon Kan Theater on Saturday\, March 29th. Doors open at 4 PM and a small reception will be held prior to the film’s screening\, beginning at 5 PM. Tickets are selling fast and must be purchased in advance\, so don’t delay! \nSupport for the film screenings provided through a George and Sakaye Aratani CARE (Community Advancement Research Endowment) Award.

SUMMARY:Lost & Found: Searching for Home
DESCRIPTION:Through September 14\, 2026. This exhibition explores the complex relationship between place and belonging through the lens of Asian American\, Native Hawaiian\, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) identity. In this exhibit\, artists unpack attempts to reconnect with their cultural homelands\, through both physical and emotional journeys\, to answer the timeless question: where and what defines “Home”? \nExpressed in a variety of media including painting\, video and installations\, this uniquely AANHPI perspective inspires conversation to both empower and challenge our perceptions of home and highlight the challenges to finding belonging in diaspora. The exhibition features captivating work from a diverse range of artists including including Eric Chan / 陳志宇 / 진지유\, Lauren Iida\, Ravleen Kaur\, and Kyler Pahang.

SUMMARY:Day of Remembrance Proclamation
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, February 18\, 2025. The County invites you to join us in honoring and remembering the Japanese American community impacted by the signing of Executive Order 9066\, 83 years ago. \nWe will gather to solemnly reflect on this day in history\, pay tribute to the resilience of the Japanese America community and the lessons learned from this dark chapter in our nation’s history. \nCouncilmembers Dembowski and Zahilay will issue a Day of Remembrance proclamation at the February 18th County Council meeting\, and we invite members of the public to join us. Densho and JACL Seattle will receive the proclamation. We are hoping for a good showing that sends a message that we must never let this part of American history repeat itself. \nIn 2017\, the King County Council issued a Day of Remembrance proclamation for the 75th anniversary of the signing of Exec Order 9066. It feels more important than ever to reflect upon the grave injustices and violations of civil liberties that were so easily imposed on members of our Japanese Americans community during World War II to denounce a repeat of these actions. \n

SUMMARY:Ireicho National Tour 2025-2026
DESCRIPTION:The Book of Names National Monument for the WWII Japanese American Incarceration National Tour 2025-2026\nOn February 18\, 2025\, we launched an ambitious effort to bring the Ireichō\, a book monument containing the names of 125\,284 individuals of Japanese ancestry unjustly incarcerated during World War II\, to different camps and communities throughout the US.\nThe tour kicked off at the National Archives/Navy Memorial Visitors’ Center in Washington DC\, where the Book of Names was displayed alongside the original copy of Executive Order 9066. The 100-year old Masaharu Ishii stamped his sister’s name in the Ireichō to officially kick off the national tour which continued with stamping opportunities to commemorate the Day of Remembrance at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History from February 19-21\, 2025. \n\nNamed after the Japanese term for “consoling the spirits\,” the Ireichō monument honors both those who have gone before us as well as those who carry on the memories and legacies of forced removal\, unjust incarceration\, and family separation. Every visitor to the monument is invited to contribute to the creation of the monument by marking one or more names in the Ireichō with a blue hanko stamp. For many camp survivors and descendants\, leaving this mark has been a way to honor the personhood of a family member who suffered the indignities and losses of the wartime incarceration. \n\nYou are the monument to this history. By participating in the stamping of the book during the national tour\, you\, too\, become part of the permanent record of the names and the honoring of them. The tour will run to late summer 2026\, when the Ireichō will be formally gifted to the Japanese American National Museum by the Irei Project. JANM is our partner for the national tour\, as part of JANM on the Go.

SUMMARY:Tengu and Taiko!
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, February 16\, 2025. Seattle University and the Minidoka Pilgrimage Planning Committee is pleased to present the 2025 Japanese American Day of Remembrance marking over 80 years since the signing of Executive Order 9066 on February 19\, 1942 that forced all persons of Japanese ancestry off the West Coast of the United States. \nThe 2025 program will have two parts. Exhibits and a way to support the Minidoka pilgrimage will be available in Atrium\, and the first half of the program will be the special screening of the documentary on The Tengu Club\, a club that has been around since the 1930s. It is a salmon fishing club that was formed by Japanese Americans. Members of the club were denied entry to local fishing derbies\, and thus the club was created and remains open to all. \nThe second half of our program will feature the Seattle University Hidaka Taiko club and will include special guest performers. Hidaka Taiko\, founded in 2016\, was started by an exchange student from Sophia University in Tokyo\, Japan. This dynamic club continues to flourish and welcomes players of all skill levels. \nWe will also be having a panel discussion after the movie\, moderated by Lorraine Bannai\, Professor Emeritus from Seattle University School of Law.
