Tengu and Taiko!

February 16 @ 12:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Free

Sunday, February 16, 2025. Seattle University and the Minidoka Pilgrimage Planning Committee is pleased to present the 2025 Japanese American Day of Remembrance marking over 80 years since the signing of Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942 that forced all persons of Japanese ancestry off the West Coast of the United States.

The 2025 program will have two parts. Exhibits and a way to support the Minidoka pilgrimage will be available in Atrium, and the first half of the program will be the special screening of the documentary on The Tengu Club, a club that has been around since the 1930s. It is a salmon fishing club that was formed by Japanese Americans. Members of the club were denied entry to local fishing derbies, and thus the club was created and remains open to all.

The second half of our program will feature the Seattle University Hidaka Taiko club and will include special guest performers. Hidaka Taiko, founded in 2016, was started by an exchange student from Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. This dynamic club continues to flourish and welcomes players of all skill levels.

We will also be having a panel discussion after the movie, moderated by Lorraine Bannai, Professor Emeritus from Seattle University School of Law.
