Tuesday, February 18, 2025. The County invites you to join us in honoring and remembering the Japanese American community impacted by the signing of Executive Order 9066, 83 years ago.
We will gather to solemnly reflect on this day in history, pay tribute to the resilience of the Japanese America community and the lessons learned from this dark chapter in our nation’s history.
Councilmembers Dembowski and Zahilay will issue a Day of Remembrance proclamation at the February 18th County Council meeting, and we invite members of the public to join us. Densho and JACL Seattle will receive the proclamation. We are hoping for a good showing that sends a message that we must never let this part of American history repeat itself.
In 2017, the King County Council issued a Day of Remembrance proclamation for the 75th anniversary of the signing of Exec Order 9066. It feels more important than ever to reflect upon the grave injustices and violations of civil liberties that were so easily imposed on members of our Japanese Americans community during World War II to denounce a repeat of these actions.
