Mikoshi Carriers Wanted!

October 11, 2025 @ 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM

Saturday, October 11, 2025.

On the final day of Japan Week, Saturday, October 11, a mikoshi (portable shrine) group, Mikoshi Sakurakai Society, will be coming from Vancouver, Canada with their mikoshi! Anyone interested in experiencing a traditional Japanese mikoshi, or in carrying it, is welcome to participate—regardless of gender.

Carrying a mikoshi gives you the chance to experience the vibrant energy of a Japanese festival. With a history spanning 1,270 years, the mikoshi serves as a powerful symbol of community and tradition, fostering a deep sense of belonging among both participants and spectators. Join us in creating a festival atmosphere! We’re recruiting 20-30 mikoshi carriers.

What do Mikoshi Carriers do?

Take turns carrying a Mikoshi (portable shrine) and parading through the event venue! Each group will carry the mikoshi for approximately 10 minutes before switching with another group. When you’re not carrying, you’ll cheer on your teammates and onlookers. Participants will be provided with matching hanten coats by the Mikoshi group which you will return at the end of the parade. Experienced carriers will provide training before the mikoshi parade begins.

Requirements:
Healthy individuals aged 15 and older.
– Wear a plain white or black T-shirt and long pants (no shorts or skirts).
– Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes like sneakers (sandals or slippers are not allowed for safety reasons).
– While participating in the mikoshi parade, wearing backpacks or carrying large bags is not allowed.
– A bottle of water will be provided to each mikoshi carrier after the parade.
– Even if you have previously carried a mikoshi, everyone is required to participate in the rehearsal/training.
